Standing on a narrow wooded ridge beside an abandoned farmstead below the
Hribrska Zijalka Cave, some 180 metres above the village of Solčava, is
the oldest yew tree in Slovenia. It is estimated to be 1000 years old and
is surprisingly wide for a yew tree, with a circumference of 2.4 metres
. Its top has been struck by a lightning for several times, which severely
damaged the tree. Nevertheless, it recovered well and it still gives red
fruits, being a female tree.
Due to its exceptional dimensions this tree is protected as natural heritage.
